The Mask

The light flickers in the distance as the snow danced to the song of the howling wind and the restless trees, the sky was painted in the darkest blue and gray as the moon was fighting to be seen from behind the fortress of clouds that seemed to be unmoving. The wind and snow had already bitten all the warmth from Zuri’s face and was starting to cut through the cotton gloves that she was now cursing because she had chosen the cute cotton and lace over the fur and leather that would have kept her hands warm, why did she always fall for appearance first when it came to making decisions, it was one of her major flaws and she knew it was but she could never seem to overcome this ever losing battle. She could not think about that now she had come all this way for one reason and she could not let herself get cold feet now, she let a small chuckle escape through her shallow and labored breathing due to the fact that she really could not afford to get cold feet because she still had a little more walking to do and at this time of night if she stopped to rest and fell asleep she would surely freeze to death before anyone came close to finding her body when the sun would eventually shower the world with warmth once again.

The Mask she wore was one that nobody else have ever seen or had ever even known about, she had kept it her secret for so long she was beginning to lose herself, her true self. She knew she would have to do this even if she would lose the one person who had meant the world to her, he was the reason she was out here dragging herself through this frozen hell, ” So stupid” she kept repeating the words to herself, this whole idea, she should have just took some sleeping pills and forced herself to fall asleep so just for a few hours she could stop existing, it was all getting too far out of hand she could no longer handle this torture, waking up every morning to a new face. She forgot what it was like to look at her own face did she have freckles or not? What color were her eyes? What did her hair look like? These were the questions she would ask herself every night when she would lay awake staring at the ceiling.

The Mask was something she had just stumbled across at a flea market in a town down by the coast where her grandmother had lived, her grandmother had always warned her about finding things down by the coast she always told her scary stories about the ghost and spirits that haunted the wharf. She would tell her stories of a women who used to seduce men into her home and drink their blood to stay young and when their wives would come looking she would cast a spell on them so they would kill themselves in some of the most painful of ways. She used to love to listen to these stories when she was younger but the older she got the more she thought her grandmother was starting to lose her marbles.

She thought the Mask was so beautiful and mysterious  it was painted black as charcoal with matching feathers around the temples creating a cat eye effect, black lace with glitter was sewn onto the mask with swirls and jewels covering spots where the lace met together, around the eyes black and silver interlocked in a dance that made you look directly into them and the black satin ribbon that was used to tie the mask to you, it was so enticing like it was calling to her promising her that magical things would happen if she did and so she bought the stupid thing.

She had forgotten all about it until the day her grandmother died and she went back to her house to collect some of her stuff from the room she had when she stayed there, she remembered buying it and had never tried it on and once she did she noticed it the change her hair shifted to the color of black itself it was almost purple in certain light, her eyes were blue and gray almost white in a strange way, her skin was pale which she grew tired of due to everyone thinking she was ill all the time, but her lips were always a crimson red no matter how hard she tried to tone them down they always returned to that red and her eyes were always covered with black eyeliner and mascara with a gray and black eyeshadow to match, she thought she looked like a bit gothic but everyone was always drawn to her it was like her looks were more inviting and seductive rather than dark and scary.

She got bored with the fact that no matter what guy she asked out they all said yes and had done whatever she asked until the day she ran into Raiden who seemed to careless about how she looked or what she wanted, they worked together on a book editing project for one of her close friends but her boss had made Raiden tag along and she soon found him to be the worst person in the world until the day they were both going to kill each other, or so she had thought he had back her against the wall of the hotel elevator and she was just about to raise her knee straight into his privates when he crushed his mouth against hers and she lost all of her feeling. It was a kiss that made everything vanish around them, it was a hungry kiss, one that had been building for so long she could not help but let him come back to her room. The next morning he had still been there and told her how crazy she drove him and how much he needed her and surprisingly she felt the same way.

That was why she had to do this she had to tell him the woman that he loved was not her, that the mask she wore was one of lies and once she told him he would find her crazy more and likely but she had to tell him let him see the true her even if she had to wear this mask for the rest of her life and he would never get to see the person she used to be, the one she asked herself about every night she could not lie to him anymore. She was going to tell him and even if he thought she was completely and broke up with her she knew he had the right to know, she would make him see the real her, make him see that she was serious.

I think cliffhangers are the best don’t you ❤

Come back tomorrow for the rest of the story!

The True soul of a monster: part 2

The sea was cold and black just like everything else in her life, dull and cold, she refused to let anything into her life even her sister, she cared for her dearly yes but she could not love her something broke inside her the day her parents died. They had all been so happy and carefree for most of their lives, mother who would do nothing all day besides knit and read books before the fireplace, father who would manage his business from his office at home. Sweet sister and her playing on the rug in the living room while Copper, the stray dog who found its way into the house and their family, lay curled up next to them. Everything was perfect until that winter night, the snow storm was the worst they have ever had, they lived so far away from town that mother and father day to travel by horse to get them supplies to last until the snow would melt. She remembered being curled up in front of the fireplace with her sister shivering with copper in the middle of them sharing his warm golden fur with them. Mother and father had left early that morning but they still had not come back even after hours of waiting, then night fell and the sun rose the next morning, one of the horses that had carried her parents came back that morning and was frightened they could barely get the poor dear back into the barn.

The horse was covered in scars and claw marks that both of the girls knew all too well, it was the marks of the snow wolves that hunted in this part of the lands, the girls had lost their older brother to the wolves two years ago she remembers the grim look on father’s face as he walked back to the house with brothers gun and the scream that came from mother followed by sobs is something that haunted her dreams even now. Their neighbor had come to see then a day or two later, he had mother’s purse slung across the back of his horse’s saddle. That was when she felt it the drift in her soul, the breaking in her chest, she could not cry or scream, or move she just shut down. Her sister sobbed into her hands as Clint handed over the bag to her with a look on his face that told us exactly what we both had already knew.

Clint helped both of them taking on the role of their lost uncle, while sister became a copy of mother always telling her what to do and how and when, with no room for argument. Which did not bother her as much as she thought it would, no her and sister were always close and sister would always tell her what to do any ways.

She was snapped back into her body as the laughing filled her head once more. Oh my sweet darling, do you not like what you see. No one ever does my dear, this is you underneath that pretty face and human flesh you are as much a monster as me. You can not escape me, you cannot run from me.

She realized that the voice in her head was right, she could not run or fight. She was this monster, this horrible disgusting thing that stood before her, was her.  The empty chest, the bloody claws, the hollow eyes, everything, it was all her and the way she chose to live her life. She thought she was going to be sick, how could she be this thing, how could she fall so deep into despair.

Sister, I know that you are scared to let someone near you, but it is okay, because no matter how scared you are to love someone, I will just have to love you twice as hard. You can push me away and fight me tooth and claw, but I will always be here right beside you, I will hold on to you no matter what, you may not be my child by birth but after raising you for so long, you are mine dear sister and I will not let you push me away.

That was voice the one that she knew far too well filled her head, the voice that was sweet as honeysuckle and soft as a cloud, it was a voice of pure love. Her sister’s voice filled her head and the image of her being pinned down by her sister after they had been fighting about why she refused to love anyone even charming Rayden, who day after day still stood by her side even if he knew how broken she was. Her sister screamed at her to understand that she was loved even if she refused to love anyone else.

She felt it, the hot tears that spilled from her eyes and dripped into the blackness before her. She was this heartless monster but yet they still love her. They both still fought for her, trying to bring her into the light and out of this darkness that surrounded her. Maybe this is how everyone truly saw her and she was just now seeing it herself, but if they could love her even in this disgusting, broken form, then just maybe.

“I am not afraid of you. I know that you are me, just as I am you. I might be terrified of you but I know that you are just as terrified of me. For I am the thing of your nightmares, you refuse to love because you are scared of losing love, therefore you have no heart but I do. You hollow out your eyes so you can only see the black in life, but I see everything, all the colors that make you wither away to your hole of black. Your claws drip with blood from all the fighting you do to keep others away, but I let them in, I crave their touch even if I do not want it, I need to feel their love even if I hate it. That dagger on your tail is your way of dealing with your problems by slicing through them so they can no longer exist. I hold these daggers to defend myself so that no one else may hurt me, I do not slice through my problems I run from them I run from everything that crosses me. I am your nightmare just as you are mine.”

You sweet darling doe are the first to ever except my form. You are the first to stare at your true self and not crumble from the fear and disgust that is truly you. So now I just have one question for you. What will you do now? Will you continue to run from your fears? Will you keep pushing others away? Will you ever learn to love? Will you truly become me? Or, will you fight? Will you try to change your ways and become something more than this, something more than me?

She opened her eyes to see the beast that stood before her once again and stared at that one blue eye, and seen the tears sliding down its face, this beast that she had created did not ask to be made this way. It did not ask to be turned into this demon, it was her fault that she was destroying herself. She walked toward the beast slowly with every shaking step echoing off the walls of the cave. She touched the leather skin that made her stomach flip and roll inside her, she wiped away the tears that slid from the eye so much like her mother’s.

“I will change for the both of us. I will fix this brokenness that resides in both of us if you just let me have that stone. I. . . I just want to save my sister. . . please she is the only thing I have left in this world.” The beast before her stood tall and straighten so it now towered over her.

My darling you are already changing. You came here to face me. You did not run from your fears. You put the love you feel for your sister before yourself. You tried not to love but yet you have my dear. I will let you take the stone if you keep your promise to change, but not for me but for yourself.

“I promise. . . I promise to try.” The beast raised a claw to wipe away the tears that slid down her face, she tried not to flinch as the touch of the cold metal claw. Then the beast spoke softly into her mind once more as it handed her the stone of life that would save her sister’s life.

You are bound by the bond of promise to change for better, for not only me but for yourself. I look forward to seeing you change and maybe you could stop by again, if the fear does not consume you. If you break your bond to me I will find you and your sister I will take back the life that I so freely gave to you my darling.

“Yes, I will keep my bond” She took one last look into the eye of her mother and turned to what she assumed was the door of the cave then the two spirit’s that danced before her, leading the way back to home.

I wish you the best on your journey to a life that will make you happy and fill your soul with hope my darling.

She turned to take one last look into the cave but there was nothing there and she could now see the cave in the light as she turned and found the cave entrance to be shimmering in the bright light of the moon. the cave being no deeper than a closest in her home. She would have thought it all a dream if it were not for the purple rock that laid in her hand but there was something else as she looked at her wrist she seen a small black heart, like a tattoo was just place upon her. She rubbed the mark and yet it still remained. Then like a whisper being carried on the wind she felt the slightest tingle in her right ear as the words filled her mind once more

This is our deal and the heart reminds you not to forget. My darling I will be seeing you again. Always watching you. You must remember the deal we have made fore I would hate to take the one thing you love from you, but hear me when I say that I will without hesitation. She sucked the night air into her lungs and ran for their house.

Once she made it to the golden warm glow of the cabin lights she could see copper waiting in the window patiently as if he had never moved from the spot since she left. Just like a mother hen she thought as she slung the door open and fell to her knees on the floor before her sister that was shaking so uncontrollably, she was freezing from the inside but the she was drenched in sweat burning up on the outside.

She pressed the stone to her sister’s heart and spoke softly like her sister always had to her.

“Emily, I am so sorry. I have always pushed you away and pushed away anyone you tired to love. I . . .  I just need you to come back. I love you Emily. . .  I really do love you. So please come back to me. I need you to be here with me.”

She tried to hold back the tears that now flowed down her face and choked back the sobs as she kept waiting for something to happen, anything to happen. She laid her head down on her sisters folded hand and cried into the covers that laid upon Emily. She was giving up, she knew this could not work, this was a stupid idea all along. It was then that the bright purple light filled the cabin as the warm blast waved through her, Copper was there at her side barking demanding whatever threat was there to leave them alone, but as soon as it happened it was gone. The light was sucked away into her sister as she watched the purple glow settle beneath the golden skin of her sister that was just white and pale as a ghost.

She breathing flattened out, the shaking slowly stopped and the sweat that soaked every inch of her skin was gone. She stared down at her sister and Copper was sniffing around Emily as if trying to find that purple light again. Emily’s eyes fluttered open those green eyes flecked with golden spots as they searched the room around her until they landed on her face.

“Elya? What happened? Why are we. . .?

“Emily! I love you. I love you so much Emily. I do. Please do not ever leave me again please!”

She cried into her sister’s arms as the warm soft touch of Emily’s love warped itself around her and held her tightly and kissed the top of her head.

“I always knew you did my little Elya all you had to do was try”

Well I finished it finally. Sorry I have been away for so long it has been a long couple of months with moving houses and family happening. Just crazy but I am back now and I will try to keep posting one story a day. So keep a lookout for tomorrow’s story!

The true soul of a monster

She had made it to the place where the many others that came before her had stood and lost themselves in the black madness that was practically trying to claw it way out of that gave and into her mind. Come my darling little doe and see for yourself why those who speak my name tremble in fear. She knew that voice would be one of silk but she was not ready for the smooth husky tone that filled her ears like the call of a siren and the scent of lavender and jasmine mixed with the smell of firewood on a snowy night filled her nose. She shuddered at the sound and smell that took over all her other senses. I know why you came my darling. I know what you wish to take from me. Just know that no one has ever walked away from here alive or at least with their minds still intact.

She scoffed at the arrogance that radiated from within the cave from the voice that spoke not from inside the cave but from inside her head. It did not matter to her she had to do this she had to face this monster that lurked within the cave for the sake of her sister who was lying on the cot at their tiny home fighting off the fever that was so fiercely claiming every part of her body and would soon claim her life, she needed the stone that lay within the cave what could heal anything or bring back loved ones, it was why so many people sought out this cave but none have ever been known to take the stone.

Come now darling doe I grow tired of waiting do you wish to take the stone or not! She would take that stone or die trying no matter what without her sister that one who had raised her all those years after their mother and father had passed away she would do this for her to repay her, for if her sister died she would have no reason to live. She braced her hands on the two daggers that were buckled to both sides of her hips as she slowly pulled them free and gripped the golden hilts so tight her finger turned white. She whispered a small prayer up to the mother above as she stalked into the cave, she was not scared of the death that lurked before her, as it welcomed her with open arms into the black abyss, no, she was most frightened of the afterlife if she were to end up damned for eternity or if she would find that peaceful bliss of nothingness and just be done with everything no longer existing.

Silly little girl you think those tiny blades can hurt me, you must be far more foolish than any other mortal that has come here to try and take the stone yet.

“I do not care what you think about be demon, I will retrieve that stone and I will leave her with my life and save my sister.”  She snarled into the darkness

There was no light in the cave nor was there darkness it was just black. The color black it’s self is what lie before her and she glided both her blades across the walls until she had to choose left or right. She chose to stick to the left due to the fact that her right were her stronger fighting hand. She felt the presence then of death itself breathing down her neck, she felt the shiver shoot down her back could hear nothing but her beating heart pounding in her ears at the silence. So tell me girl do I frighten you yet. Do you realize you stand before a god were as you are nothing more than a bug waiting to be squashed.

” You do not scare me. I am my own fear. I am the only person who can decided whether I live or die. Not you.” She tried to sound certain and unafraid but her voice had failed her as she cracked at the end.

She felt the laughter ripple around her as it filled her mind and the air around her like a damn of water had just exploded and was now pouring out to drown out everything in its path. So loud, the noise that filled her ears as the ringing filled her head then the blue light sparked to life. It floated around like a spirit in the night dancing on the wind that carried it. She lost the power to breath as she spotted the claw of black that was inches away from her its talons dripping with blood of a crimson red. The smell of iron and decaying flesh slammed into her noise she could not stop the heaving that started as she emptied the contents of her stomach all over the cave floor. Another blue spirit appeared and she seen the tail that was shaped like a dagger but it was bent at a weird angle like someone had broken it.

The two spirits danced around snaking their way up the beast body that stood a few couple of feet from her. Its fur was in clumps and patches and what wasn’t covered in fur was black and looked to be made like leather covered in scars and cuts. The monster’s chest was something out of a comic book or a nightmare it was a skeleton hollow and empty she could see straight through to the red unskin of the back the blue and purple vessels that did not pulse of beat nothing moved inside this monster. It was like its chest was a cage a prison it kept you in until you slowly died from only the mother knows what. She tried to rip her eyes away from the beast before she could see its head but it was too late. She could not look away it was like she was frozen in fear as the spirits danced high above her head showing her the face of the enemy she would die to tonight.

Its face was half fur and half leather on one side the face had a smile cut and stitched into a smile while the other half bared razor sharp teeth that were just piled in side its mouth like it all just came in at once. One eye held nothing but blackness and death but the other was of sky blue filled with what looked like sadness and regrets. She started into that one eye ignoring the blood that dripped from the black eye and the smile made of shards of razors, and the horns on top the demon’s head that were spiraled and bent at wrong angles, the ears that were missing parts. She started into that eye of sky blue and felt the crushing weight that hit her as she knew the color and the way that eye looked.

That eye was just like the pair her mother had the sky blue color that was as bright and beautiful as the summer sun on a hot day shredding away the chill of the spring and winter and the rain that covered the ground spreading joy and life throughout the land. She knew that eye because she stared into that eye every single day of her life. She felt it then the slip into madness and darkness that pulled her under in the sea of black. She looked at that smile again that was forced upon the beast just as she forced herself to smile every day since her parents death. The eye that was nothing but blackness were the eyes she stared out of every day not seeing the beauty that was lying around her. The flowers that her sister would always tend. The smile of the boy that she had yet to tell how she truly felt about him. The sky that she would never see again. Her eyes drifted to the chest that was hollow and held nothing inside, it was her chest where she no longer let her heart love she had casted everything out and would not let anything into her heart again nothing would make her feel that pain of losing a loved on again. The claws that dripped with blood were her own claws that she used to shred anything or anyone who tried to get near her.

This beast, this monster before her, the thing that was going to end her life was herself. She could not think or breathe, the screaming in her head had gone silent everything around her faded away into blackness as she once again was floating in that sea of nothingness.

I will finish this story in a second part until then stay tuned and check out some of the other post!

The Lantern of Souls: Part 4

Rav0a6e09dad4737adee89560efdc8226a1.jpganah shifted under the crushing weight trying to get air into her lungs savoring the cool winter night air or trying to at least if this was going to be her last breath she would treasure it. Everything was starting to go black if only she could get some air inside her lungs if only she had been stronger and seen the wolf coming so many regrets, so many things she wished she could go back and change, then as if the mother above smiled down upon her she felt her lungs filling with air like a balloon it was as if she was sucking all the air out of the world. She looked around frantically once she noticed that she could move and the weight had been lifted off her but she had forgotten about her back when the pain of the scares that were trying to heal felt like they were ripping open even more with every move she made, she was sure she would still end up bleeding out here and now. She seen Lann staring at her with such a sad look on his face that now had a scar going down his right side it was not as deep as hers his was just a three shallow scratches that went right over his now swollen eye, she let her gaze drift to the wolf beast that laid dead on the ground with what looked to be an arrow sticking out of it’s eye but where had it come from. She learned to stop asking questions though as soon as she seen Kyamie with a bow in hand and arrows strapped to her back accompanied by Eugeen with what looks to be some sort of twin swords or maybe daggers, coming toward them fast but on the other side were the wolves that were far more faster. She watched as Kyamie was letting arrow after arrow fly taking down two, three, four of the wolves her marks hit most of the time but every now and then one would stray from the path and end up on the ground before the beast or just fly past them.

Eugeen was running as fast as he could faster than most the boys she went to highschool she was so focused on him as she was laying on the ground trying not to move to much as the pain was so unbearable for her that she did not notice the wolf that was behind her until she felt the breath on the back of her neck then there was blood that covered her face and what was left of her clothes oh god she was going to be sick, Lann crawled to her and looked at her with tears in his eyes.

“I. .  I am so sorry Rava I did not mean for you to get hurt I was supposed to keep you safe I told you I would keep you safe and yet . . . look at you. I have to move you I know it’s going to hurt but i’ll try to be careful.”

She nodded her head understanding and mentally preparing herself for the pain that was about to come, she watched as Lann took off his flannel shirt and wrapped it around her back she bit down on a cry as the shirt stuck to the open scars on her back, he as gently as he could but she still let a soft scream escape from her clenched teeth she felt him tense and felt sorry that she made him feel so bad. She gazed in amazement as Eugeen danced around the battlefield so gracefully knocking off beast after beast his blades covered in blood were more beautiful than terrifying it was like a ballet so mesmerizing but it was not long before the pain overcame her as her breathing began to shallow out and her vision became blurry and all she could see was black.

When she awoke she was laying in a bed covered in bandages but her back felt almost as good as new just a little sore, she scanned her cobblestone room that looked very barren but it held a bookshelf as one side along with a writing table and the chair that sat beside her bed had a sleeping Lann in it. He looked so bad the three scars that marked him face and his eye still swollen shut but his raven black hair looked even more messy than before, wait she could see colors now. What had happened while she was asleep she never knew she could miss color so much she truly felt horrible for blind people in the world it really was a truly beautiful thing seeing the world in color. She turned her attention back to Lann and seen his pale face and his red tank top he was now wearing instead of his flannel shirt that she had ruined last night she noticed his eyes started to flutter right before they opened and she did not turn away from his gaze she had been wondering for so long what those eyes looked like and now she would finally get to see them. His eyes were dark like a gray sky before a storm but there was also a hint of silver like a spirit itself was swirling around in his gaze, she seen a slight pink tint warm his cheeks as he noticed her staring at him. He flashed her one of his goofy smiles and gave her a questioning look about whether she was okay or not.

“I can see color now. Why could I not before?”

“Well my little lamb partake in the food or refreshments of this world your mind still cannot see past the unconscious barriers they have put up. It is like you brain denies being here it refuses to understand you are truly here so once you partake your brain and soul have no other choice to accept the true and you can see everything clearly for what it is you are no longer looking through a wall.”

“So last night when I was attacked it felt like I was dieing the scares felt so deep and now it feels like it was only a scratch, why?”

“The wolves, as i’m sure you noticed, are not normal wolves they are spirit wolves their claws did only scratch you but the blood and the pain you felt was real it was your soul being ripped away. In this would you have a outer shell to your soul that is the form we take just like our bodies in the human world but in this world the shell is thin and fragile it cannot take much damage. That is why we must stick together and protect each other. When I brought you to the castle we were able to bandage put the scares and keep your soul from spilling out any further that is why you feel so weak now it is also why my eye is so swollen now it will take some time to heal.”

“None of this makes any sense.”

“Well kitten I don’t make the rules I just follow them.”

The door to her right swung open and Kyamie and Eugeen were waltzing in and she guessed they had the right to after what they had went through last night Eugeen looked like he was never even touched by one of those beast but Kyamie right arm was bandaged up pretty good she could only assume she took as swipe from one of the beast mighty claws.

“Well I see you two love birds are awake and well.” Kyamie talked with such arrogance it made Ravanah want to vomit but there was also something kind in her voice as well that she could not explain.

“So last night Kyamie and I had a few spare minutes after we made it to the castle and got our weapons to go check the outskirts of the land and we think we might have been able to find a hole in the barrier.”

“Wait one damn minute! You mean to tell me well me and Rava were fighting for our lives to make it to this damn place you two were out playing detective!” There was that fire again in Lann’s eye this time the silver swirls were spinning faster like a carnival ride about to break off its track.

“Hey! It is because of us that you are still alive!”

“Well it is because of you two that Rava almost died!”

“Boys that is enough!” It was pretty amazing how Kyamie could make the two shut up so instantly without any other remark.

“Now as Eugeen was saying we are going to try and make our break tonight, wait has anyone seen Ethan?”

“No we thought he would be with you guys.”

It had not even crossed her mind until now that Ethan was never seen last night, she could only assume that the wolves had gotten him which did not even affect her much due to the fact that he had never even spoken to her, but it still shocked her a little that she could care so little for someone’s death.

“Well we can only assume the worst until we find any evidence otherwise, but the plan is we get to the barracks and equip you two with whatever weapon you want then we head out to the border, Kyamie and I took down most of the wolves last night and unless the old hag threw in some more of them than we should be okay. We will move fast and silent we cannot alert her to what we are doing. At this time at night she should be at the cauldron looking for other souls or sitting in on the other reapers meetings, she will be there until  3:30 a.m. so we have only a small window of time to make this happen.”

Ravanah still felt a little weak but she would make this work, she had to get back to her body, to her friends and family. She looked to Lann who was staring at her his eyes asking a silent question as to whether or not she was ready for this, she took a deep breath and nodded her head that she could handle this she would make it through this.

Once they had went down the what felt like thirty-five flights of stairs if Lann had carried her up all these stairs she would have to thank him later because she felt like she was dieing. They walked into the room that was dark with only two torches placed on either sides of the wall. She looked at the room that had various weapons placed on the walls from maces to spiked club, she was amazed at all the things in the room but she guessed it would not be a good show for people to watch if they weren’t struggling to survive. She watched as Lann made his way over to the swords and picked out one that was twice as long as her arms and the handle looked like it was made of gold with the crest on a lion on the handle. She was scanning the room for anything she thought she might be capable of welding, but still nothing was catching her eye until she seen the case that held Spears. She picked one up that was made of black metal and the spear on the end was of the prettiest silver metal she had ever seen not even a scratch on it, she remembered playing with on when she was little with her grandfather just to hunt with one instead of those stupid new age contraption as he called them. She remembered watching him in amazement as he threw it about twenty feet in front of them and hit a dear straight in the head it didn’t even have time to let out a cry in pain it just tumbled to the ground.

“Can I ask you guys something?” She looked to the three who now stood behind her.

“Ask away my shy lamb.” She bit down on her retort as Lann flashed her another smile

“What will happen to you guys once we are free I can go back to my body, but what about all of you? Do any of you have a body to return to.”

“Well my dear we are all dead, Kyamie died in a fire trying to save her brother from the flames that circled around them she managed to get him out of a window but before she could get out the roof fell in on her and well that was when the reaper came to claim her soul. Eugeen here was in a car wreck when he was coming home from sparring practice one night the paramedics were just about to reach him he could hear, when she came and took his soul. Ask for me I was wondering through the woods one night in the snow I was trying to find my little sister how had ran out of the house after my father yelled at her when I found her there were wolves all around her ripping her body apart. If I had been sooner I could have saved her I was just go mad that I just snapped I grabbed a branch and just started swinging the next thing I know one was on my back then my leg and I just gave up that was when she came for me. You see my dear when you die or come to a near death experience your souls leaves your body or prepares to tear away from it. It is like a piece of fabric that gets trone when you wear it too much but when it’s time to fix it you have to sew it back together. Your soul is the way once it tears you must sew it back together but you body takes a few minutes to do this, that is when she comes and takes your soul.”

“So when I feel from that tree I could really be dead right now!” Here it came again the panic like a river that just broke through a damn it washed over her drowning her.

“Rava calm down we do not know that yet I do not think the fall would kill you. I do however think that you might have a few broken limbs assuming you were pretty high up in a tree like you were tonight you probably hit a couple of branches on the way down.” He grabbed her by the face and held her gaze, it was so calming having him near her like he could just dry up the river that threatened to bury her at the bottom of her sea of fears.

“Your. . . your right I just need to calm down. I need to get out of here first and worry about things later, also you never answered my question as to what will happen to you guys.”

“Well Ravanah, Lann and I will finally be free to move on from this cage we have been locked in and cross over to the motherland, Eugeen is different though we do not know what will happen to him. He could come with us to the motherland or he could end up going back to his body depending on whether or not his body is still fighting to live or not.”

“I am lost what do you mean Kyamie?”

“That night I know for sure I hear the sirens and I know I seen the flashing lights in the distance through the blackness that was trying to engulf me. I even remember hearing my mother’s voice begging me to come back to her. I think I might still be alive in a hospital or something like that, just maybe, I know my parents and they never give up hope. So if my body is still trying to breath they will keep me on live support until I come back to them, which I plan to do.”

“I see. I hope that you are alive Eugeen I would like to be you friend one day even if I cannot be friends with Lann and Kyamie.” Something deep down in her hit like a piece of her heart broke. She only knew these people for a short time but something in her felt like it knew them all very well already.

“My silly little kitten we already are friends bodiless of not.” She looked up from the floor she had been staring at lost deep in her thoughts to see the three people that were now apart of her heart and she would never forget them even after they all move on and leave her

She tightened her grip on the spear, this would be the weapon she would use to get her life back and save the rest of her new friends from being trapped here any longer. This would be her strength, her hope, and her future.

The Lantern of Souls: Part 3

spirit_wolf_by_felondog-d7hq6tg.jpgRavanah had once again made it to the top of a tree where she could scout out the rest of the land but she still had seen no sign of Lann or any of the others, so she decided it was time for her to start covering some ground before the wolves soon found her and not knowing what special powers they held terrified her to the point she was shaking but she had to try and stay calm moving for branch to branch this high up was not a time to be all out of sorts. The trees in this forest where thick and tangled more like a jungle than a forest if you asked her if only there were swinging vines that would make things easier nevertheless she would have to make this work, when she was younger her and her older brother would play in the trees night and day her mother thought they were more monkeys than children they even ended up camping in the trees a few nights after their father had built them a platform to hold them and their sleeping bags it was not a big tree house just a simple flat piece of wood attached to the tree but that was all they ever needed, maybe that was why she had decided to climb the tree when she was playing hide and seek in the woods and why she was now tangled in the maze of branches it was her safe place.

She had stopped for just a moment to catch her breath and to rest her arms from all the pull ups she had had to do jumping from branch to branch and after almost missing the last one she thought it was a well deserved one. She had not heard the howl of the wolves or the sound of crunching leaves in a while so she thought it would be okay to rest here until the crunching started but it was not the crunching of a slow stalking predator it was the crunching of the prey barreling through the forest below she was soon up on her feet jumping once again from branch to branch trying to catch up to who or what ever was making so much noise and she was shocked to see Lann running like an idiot as if he has never played hide and seek before, she tried very hard to contain the laugh that had slipped from her smile when she watched him trip and roll into a pile of leaves with the expression of shock all over his face. His head turned to her position in the trees staring at her like the thought had never even crossed his mind to climb a tree like she was some crazy lunatic.

“Hey stupid you know the key to hide and seek is to actually hide and be quite right not make as much noise as possible right or did your little brain already forget?” The smirk on her face was one she was very proud to show that was his karma for calling her all those pet names earlier.

“Well kitten I guess I had you wrong maybe I should call you monkey instead they way you are clinging to that tree for dear life.” The smirk on his face was full of smartass as he winked at her after.

“Keep it up with the pet names and I will not help you and you do know there are wolves out there right or are you trying to draw their attention to you?”

“Alright, alright I am sorry your highness will you help me? How did you even get up there the branches are too far up to jump and grab.”

“You have to run up the trunk and grab the lowest branch when you jump off use that momentum to reach the next, it is very simple actually but I guess I just have a bigger brain than you.”

“Okay well hang right there and let me try this”

Oh she was going to enjoy this very much as he started to run he misjudged the distance the step would take to get him running up the tree and ending up slamming face first into the tree. she showed on containment this time as she let her laugh breakthrough the night as Lann was cursing at the tree.

“Lann don’t run like you are going to turn sideways and walk up the tree all you are trying to do it get footing to move up the tree it is like you are climbing it just without hands and in a fast pace way.” Even though he teased her all the time she did feel some remorse for his pain he did promise to protect her after all.

She watched below as a fire was lit behind his eyes he was determined to do this and she found that a small part of her wanted him to succeed. Lann did as she had said and ran straight up the tree like he was climbing it with no hands, she was shocked he was doing it as he jumped just in time to grab the lowest branch and hauling himself up like it was a piece of cake. She could pull herself up as well but she did struggle just a tad bit it took her a few seconds to get fully on the branch where as Lann was on the branch in mere seconds then to the next until he was standing on the branch beside her.

“Okay my dear chimp, where did you learn to climb like that?”

“My brother taught me and we don’t have time for this we need to move before the wolves catch up to us I am sure they are already on their way here due to your careless running. Why were you just running in the first place?” She decided she would not give him the satisfaction of pushing her buttons, he could call her any pet name no matter how much she hated it she would not let him see her anger.

“To be honest I thought I could just outrun them and make it to the castle and lock myself inside.”

“That is a stupid idea did you even think about what if you could not outrun them then what would you do or what if you made it inside the castle but there was something else waiting on the inside?”

“Well my dear scaredy cat I was not thinking about that”

Ravanah rolled her eyes at his stupidity surely all boys aren’t as dumb as this one Eugeen looked like he at least had some common sense. They were now moving a fast as they could through the trees and she could now see the castle in the clearing ahead but she could see the wolves that everything else in this horrible world they were black covered in a blue mist their eyes glowed of blue along with their teeth claws and tail. If they weren’t super dangerous and ready to kill them all they looked beautiful with all their detailed engraving around their bodies she might even love to keep one as a pet if it were ever possible. They moved so fast how anyone could outrun these things it would be impossible they moved like cheetahs maybe even faster, but they were on a hunt for blood and it was Lann, hers, and the rest of their friends blood that they craved.

They had made it to the edge of the trees and the only way to the castle was to cross the clearing where the wolves were not sniffing around trying to find their trails it seems they had picked up one when one of them raised their head to the moon and let out a death cry howl it was a sicking howl one that was distorted like a tortured soul then the packed like a flash of blue lightening they ran into the distance now would be their chance to escape. She turned to tell Lann the plan but maybe he was not as dumb as she thought because it seems as if he had the same idea but he was breaking a couple of tree limbs they were pretty thick and it looked like it took a lot of work f0r him to break it judging by the sweat that rolled down his forehead and his slightly heavy breathing he handed her one of the branches and clasped her hand around it and looked into her eyes.

“If things go bad we are going to have to fight and all we have are these branches so if it comes to that I want you to empty your mind and you heart of thoughts and feelings you need to be empty of everything you need to only see life or death not the wolf in front of you just your life or its.”

Her hands trembled as a weight started to press down on her chest the world started to spin, air she needed air, she knew what this was all too well, another panic attack, she had many of these before tonight and she hated them she used to take her medication for them but had recently stopped when they seemed to not be happening any more but tonight on the worst night possible to have one. Lann grab both sides of her face and looked deep into her wild eyes that were scream and begging to be freed from this place.

“Rava I only just met you but I know you can do this okay I will be right beside you. I will not let you die I made a promise and I never break my promises. Now my little chimp I need you to take some slow breaths and calm down look at me at my eyes not at any thing else just at me.”

She did as he said and looked at nothing but him trying to suck down air into her lungs in a steady pattern but was still more wheezing it in and out in a frantic pattern but she could see it in his eyes again, hope, hope that she would live through tonight and return to her body and to her friends and family again. Something just came over her like the heat of the moment the fact that she might die she just crushed her face against Lann’s his lips for someone who had been bodiless for so long had such soft lips but before she let herself get in too deep she pulled away shocked by what she had done and the look on Lann’s face was one of shock and smugness.

“I uhhhh. .  I only did that to get my mind off of things sorry it had to be you but Eugeen wasn’t around so I had no choice.” What an idiot she thought that was the dumbest excuse she could have ever made.

“Whatever you have to tell yourself kitten.” He gave her one of his flashy crooked grin that made her want to punch him in the face.

They had wasted quite a bit of time so now was time for them to make their move Lann jumped down first and waited a second for her to do the same he flashed her another look of assurance and off they went running like a bunch of idiots she thought. Why could she not have ran into Kyamie surely she would have a better plan than this, her heart was racing her eyes darting back and forth across the ground trying to keep an eye out for any of the wolf spirits but it was no use because they came out of nowhere as she watched on pounce on Lann she let out a scream as she race toward him all she could see was the blue and black fur on top of him and before she knew what she was doing she raised the branch high over her head and brought it down straight on the wolf’s back she heard a crack and the sound of an animal that was in so much pain she could not help but to cry as she thought about all the pain she was putting this poor thing in even if it was trying to kill her. Lann crawled out from under the beast as it rolled on to its side like it was trying to make the pain go away she trembled at the sound the wolf was making until Lann put his branch through its heart saving it from the pain. She did not have time to think anymore about the pain her had caused to poor wolf  as Lann grabbed hold of her hand and forced her to keep moving behind him, faster they would have to move faster before the others came for them, she knew that they had heard the deadly sickened cry from the one they had just killed.

She felt it before she seen it as the large massive pain shot through her back she felt her shirt being ripped into shreds as the cool night air hit the scars on her back that now dripped with blood her was knocked to the ground and curled her body up tight into a ball waiting for the death blow to hit her, but it never came instead she peeked her eyes open as the sounds of something that no longer sounded like an animal or human. Lann had the branch in hand and was swinging it like a crazy caveman at the beast before them but it had no effect he was only making it angry, as the beast lifted up its claw and struck the branch it splintered into pieces she watched in horror as Lann dropped to his knees hold his hand where a piece of branch had now pierced through the top of it. He scooted back to where she lay gave her a look of happiness and reassurance as he threw her body of hers to keep her protected for a little longer she knew death was upon her as she felt a large crushing weight come down on her.
